John Dawson Winter III (February 23, 1944 – July 16, 2014), known as Johnny Winter, was an American musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Best known for his high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances in the late 1960s and 1970s, Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.[1]

    Johnny was a classic. I remember my first band Portrait Blues opening for him at The Worcester Civic Center in 1970. He was a super nice guy and we had a little jam at soundcheck.

    I must say, out of all the various artists who recorded this song, Johnny took Suzie Q to a greater level of appreciation!

    Yes true! I liked Fogerty’s but Johnny had that bluesy soulful attitude!

    I always loved the Winter brothers… Frankenstein was one of the last of the Rick Wakeman keyboard style big sounds – I wonder what Edgar is doing now?

    Yes, the Winter brothers have given us some great, memorable music.
    It was unfortunate that Johnny passed away in 2014. As for Edgar, I suppose he is lining up concert tours for 2016.
