“Pouki Lanmou” – Ayenn

27 Jan

Have you ever heard the song “Pouki Lanmou”?
You probably wondered about the marvelous and exquisitely-voiced creature singing it. It’s an artist named Ayenn Stark.

Ayenn Stark apparently released his only Creole album Rhythmes et Harmonies and let it lie at that. He recently released another album entitled He Walks Alone, and glancing through the tracks and seeing that not one song is in Creole!

Oh, the tragedy.

(Let’s face it kreyolicious dames: as much as we love the English language, there’s nothing more heart palpitation catalyst than hearing our men speak that Creole).

But with that one album, with that one song, the impact is immeasurable. “Pouki Lanmou” should be a staple on every Haitian music lover’s love songs playlist, right next to songs like “Kriye Chante”, “Back to Back”, “Mwen Bezwen Lanmou”, “Se Pa Pou Dat”, “Avè-w”, “Sesame”, and so on.

There’s Stark’s sweet-sexy falsetto. And the love-defining lyrics:

Pouki lanmou sou chimen an nou vwayaje

Bouke flè, santiman an nou boujònen

Pouki lanmou nan fon kè an nou

Yon gout lespwa rouze

Solèy la jwa klere pou nou de, pouki lanmou

Why does love makes its passage on our path

A bouquet of flowers, feelings flourish

Why is love in the depths of our hearts

A bit of watered hope

Sun’s joy glistens for the two of us, why love

Pouki lanmou sou chimen an nou dewoute

Bouke flè santiman an nou vinn fane

Pouki lanmou nan fon kè an nou

Tout wout lespwa bare

Solèy la jwa tenyen pou nou de, pouki lanmou

Why does love make its passage on our path off-course

A bouquet of flowers, our feelings get lukewarm

Why does love in the depths of our heart

All the pats hope bars

Sun’s joy withers for the both of us, why love

Pouki lanmou

Souri jòdi, la pènn demen

Pouki lanmou

Pouki lanmou

Lan nuit pa sa domi

Pouki lanmou

Pouki lanmou

Fè n souri epi fè n kriye

Why does love

Smile today, and hurts the next

Why love

Why love

Makes you lose sleep

Why love

Why love

Makes us smile then makes us weep

Pouki lanmou sou chimen an nou vwayaje

Bouke flè, santiman an nou boujònen

Pouki lanmou nan fon kè an nou

Tout wout lespwa bare

Solèy la jwa tenyen pou nou de, pouki lanmou

Why does love makes its passage on our path

A bouquet of flowers, feelings flourish

Why is love in the depths of our hearts

A bit of watered hope

Sun’s joy glistens for the two of us, why love

Pouki lanmou

Souri jòdi, la pènn demen

Pouki lanmou

Pouki lanmou

Lan nuit pa sa domi

Pouki lanmou

Pouki lanmou

Fè n souri epi fè n kriye

Why does love

Smile today, and hurts the next

Why love

Why love

Makes you lose sleep

Why love

Why love

Makes us smile then makes us weep

Gade kijan ou fè mwen kriye

Gade kijan ou fè kè m chavire

Ou baby, baby, baby, baby pouki

Gade kijan ou fè mwen kriye

Gade kijan w fè mwen mal

Tanpri baby, baby, baby, baby, m mande pouki

Look how you make me cry

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Oh baby, baby, baby, baby why

Look how you make me cry

Look at how much you’ve hurt me

Please baby, baby, baby, baby, I’m asking you why

Gad kijan w fè kè m chavire

Gade kijan ou fè mwen chavire

Gad kijan w fè kè m chavire

gade kijan, gade kijan

Gad kijan w fè kè m chavire

tanpri baby, baby, baby, baby, pouki

Gad kijan w fè kè m chavire

chavire, chavire

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Just look, just look

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Please baby, baby, baby, baby, why

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Capsize, capsize

Pouki lanmou

Bare chimen la vi nou, alon bagay du se lanmou

Pouki lanmou

se lanmou, pouki pouki lanmou

Pouki lanmou

Pouki lanmou, pouki lanmou, pouki lanmou, pouki lanmou, non non non

Pouki lanmou

Why has love

Gotten in the way of our lives, love sure is nothing to mess with

Why love,

It’s love, why why love

Why love

Why love, why love, why love, why love

No, no, no

Why love

Sun’s joy dimmed for us, listen baby

Gad kijan w fè kè m chavire

Gad kijan w fè kè m chavire

Gade kijan, gade kijan

Gad kijan w fè kè m chavire

Tanpri baby, baby, baby, baby

Gad kijan w fè kè m chavire

Chavire, chavire

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Just look, just look

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Please baby, baby, baby, baby, why

Look how you caused my heart to capsize

Capsize, capsize

ooooh so nice! I’ve never heard this style. I like it. Thank you for expanding my music knowledge. It has a slightly Spanish beat.

I love Haitian music, I do understand a bit of their creole language. They sing well. Wonderful love song. I would imagine the song is entitle “for whom is the love”
